The Metallic Effect

This season, runways in New York, Milan and Paris featured all things glistening and glowing in gold, copper, and bronze. Thakoon showed shiny stripes across brocade dresses, Burberry Prorsum included metallic jackets and trench coats, and Armani Prive highlighted liquid metal pieces in rich colors. Metallic accents are making an impact in interior design as well as in fashion, adding a timeless elegance and sophisticated style to the latest collections.

Schumacher offers a wide range of fresh metallic fabrics, wallcovering, and trimmings, from sheers that evoke the look of aged metals to subtle antique Gilt on craft paper.

Introducing Darya Ikat

Watch the artisanal process used to create Darya Ikat…

Traditional warp printing and hand weaving techniques are used to create this dramatic woven fabric in a crisp blend of linen and cotton yarns. A fine warp is table printed using silk screens and transferred to a loom, where it is carefully woven by hand. This process softens the bold look of the original design. Darya Ikat features an exotically patterned stripe design that gives a new look to ikat. Colorations range from sophisticated neutrals to brilliant jewel and spice shades. The color and weaving variations within each length of fabric are considered hallmarks of an authentic ikat fabric. Darya Ikat is perfect for both drapery and upholstery in a range of interior spaces.

Updating the Classic Wing

Schumacher introduces new wing chairs to the Furnishings Collection. Each of these classic silhouettes—Madison, Wilshire, Weston and Kent—has been reinterpreted with a refined and modern eye. Our new pieces fit beautifully in contemporary and traditional interiors alike.

Wilshire Wing Chair SH174: The traditional wing chair is updated in this elegant version, adapted from a mid-twentieth century frame. Its gracefully curved back, scrolled arms and slender, tapered wood legs create a refined, glamorous and modern appearance. Nail head detailing outlines the curves of the chair and adds a decorative accent to its form. Wilshire Wing Chair adds a dramatic look to a variety of living spaces.

Madison Wing Chair SH175: This sleek modified wing chair features a slanted, straight back and squared wings, which gently curve into a simplified arm. The clean and modern appearance is enhanced by a spring down box seat cushion that is angled toward its back for comfort. Madison Wing Chair is a versatile choice for main as well as accent seating in modern and traditional living areas.

Weston Wing Chair SH176: This upholstered chair combines a classic slipper with details derived from a traditional wing frame. It features clean and elegant lines, with curved, squared legs and slender wings that taper into the sides of a rounded seat base. The smaller size of this chair makes it a great option for use in a hallway or foyer, at a dining table, or as a side chair in a range of interior spaces.

Kent Wing Chair SH177: This dramatically stylized wing chair is reproduced from a late nineteenth century piece. Its clean lines and form blended with traditional details make it a great addition to a wide range of classic and modern interior spaces.

The Curule Bench

The classical curule bench has origins in ancient Rome, as the word curule is derived from the Latin word currus, meaning chariot. The term refers to the curved ‘X’ shaped benches designed for magisterial commanders and often elaborately decorated with ivory. In the sixteenth century, the curule form was revived during the Italian Renaissance in Venice, and after the discovery of the Herculaneum in 1738, Roman antiquities made a comeback throughout Europe and the New World.

Today, the classic Italian shape is a sophisticated choice for both modern and traditional interiors, depending on fabric and finish. Schumacher offers Tuscany Curule Bench (SAH8517). This timeless shape has been modernized and features a carved, painted wood base and an upholstered seat. This bench’s versatile size makes it a perfect selection for adding extra seating and a stylish, decorative element to a wide range of interior spaces.

Eyelet Appeal

Eyelet textiles offer the light airy feel of true lace and the soft look of delicate embroidery. First created in 1763, eyelet was widely used for silk mitts, gloves, aprons, handkerchiefs, hoods and caps. Initially eyelet was primarily used in fashion, but was well suited for the home as bedding, accent pillows, skirts, throws and drapery, and traditionally sold in white or ivory. Schumacher’s Collection includes a variety of eyelets that offer a twist on this well-known classic.

Camilla Eyelet, a traditional, white-on-white sheer, features a delicate eyelet embroidered in a diamond on a fine cotton cambric ground.

Anastasia Eyelet is a fine embroidery that has been made in a design of tightly woven cotton cambric circles connected by open eyelet embroidery. This new white-on-white eyelet gives a lacy, delicately detailed look to curtains.

Luna Sheer Embroidery has an over scaled eyelet and circle design, for a more modern take on an embroidered sheer. The all ivory coloration is warm and soft and adaptable to the color schemes of many interiors.

Natural Textures

Schumacher offers a range of natural textured wallcoverings including linen, jute, raw silk and horsehair weaves in a comprehensive neutral color palette. The elegant and natural look of these sophisticated textures is made practical with the addition of stain repellent finishes, making these wallcoverings suitable for a variety of interior spaces, from foyers and hallways to main living areas.

Celeste Linen Weave blends natural linen, horsehair and cotton yarns with translucent, silvery threads, giving this wallcovering a textured and subtly glamorous look.

Tristan Horsehair Weave is made with natural horsehair yarns in a horizontal striation of two neutral shades, Truffle and Ash.

Gustave Linen Weave is a rustic basket weave composed of bleached and natural linen blended with soft viscose, creating a highly textured, pebbled surface with subtle yarn variations.

Imperial Trellis in Trelliage, 2707212
Bronwyn PooleBronwyn Poole established Touch Interiors, a residential design firm based in Mosman, Australia, in 1998 and continues to serve as the Head Designer and Company Director.

In Poole’s winning design, which she refers to as “The Travellers Sanctuary,” she wanted to create a home for a world traveling couple with an interest in collecting beautiful objects from their adventures. Schumacher’s Imperial Trellis in Trelliage creates the biggest impact in the space and encompasses the bohemian spirit Poole envisioned for this scheme. Also shown is Trina Turk’s Indoor/Outdoor fabric, Tangier Frame Print in Sea Grass.

HONORABLE MENTION

Renée LeJeune Hallberg
RLH Studio – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Albero Floreale in Aqua, 5003622
Renee LeJeune HallbergRenée LeJeune Hallberg, the Owner and Principal Designer of RLH Studio, believes that having beautiful interiors isn’t enough. It has to also work for her clients’ lifestyles.

For this redesign, Hallberg felt Albero Floreale in Aqua was the perfect wallcovering to bridge the master bath and master bedroom. The wallcovering offers luxury and elegance while at the same time it provides a beautiful spa-like presence. The scale of the flowers enhances the Venetian plastered, barreled ceilings and dictates the accent paint color for the makeup vanity.

For this 1960s modern home in Palm Springs, Christopher Kennedy selected Schumacher’s Chiang Mai Dragon in Aquamarine as a detailed and dramatic backdrop for the guestroom. Known for his fresh approach to glamorous modernism, Kennedy paired the Chiang Mai wallpaper with an oversized Moroccan headboard in lime green and vintage lamps true to the era of the home.

Kippie Leland
Leland Interiors, Inc – Nashville, Tennessee
Ming Cherry Blossom in Aqua, 5001070
Kippie LelandKippie Leland, Owner/Designer of Leland Interiors, worked with her father Ted Leland until his retirement in 1997. She describes her personal style as “a collected look using pieces softened by age, beautiful fabrics, and touches of quality.”

The concept for this master bath was to create a cool oasis, a spa-like retreat for a southern couple. Schumacher’s Ming Cherry Blossom in Aqua perfectly complemented the Imperial Danby marble throughout the bathroom. Additionally, the pattern is reminiscent of the Dogwood Tree that is so prevalent in Nashville.

We hope that you will continue to follow and post on our What’s New Schumacher Blog. More contests to come!

Fit for a Queen

With the Royal Wedding in just over a week, the world is waiting to watch Kate Middleton become a modern princess when she weds Prince William.  So we decided to pay homage to our neighbors across the pond and round up some glamorous royal looks inspired by Buckingham Palace’s golden grandeur.

From the Archive: The Drab Age is Over

Trina Turk’s fresh originality, bold designs and visual punch are reminiscent of Dorothy Draper’s legendary interiors, which embodied the idea that bigger and brighter was always better.

Dorothy Draper caused a nationwide sensation with her custom-designed cabbage rose chintz for Schumacher. This best-selling pattern began a decades-long collaboration between Draper and Schumacher. The partnership created brilliantly colored textiles, wallpapers and carpets that flourished during the post-war period.

Launched in 2009, Trina Turk’s first collection for Schumacher provided the same uplifting and optimistic use of color that Dorothy Draper’s collections provided after the Great Depression and WWII.

Continuing in this tradition, Trina Turk’s second collection for Schumacher offers a splash of vivid colors and graphic impact to uplift interiors everywhere.

All About Trim

It’s all in the details. So when we saw this article on “Who, What, Wear” discussing tassels as the new rage in accessories, we couldn’t help but think about the way a tassel can dress up a shoe, a statement necklace or an interior. Don’t be afraid to accessorize your space. Trimmings enhance anything from drapery to pillows and are suitable for a range of spaces from classic to modern. Love trim? Tell us why?

Vibrant Vera Bradley

Our former Schumacher intern spotted the brightly saturated Chiang Mai Dragon in the foyer of the Vera Bradley boutique. We love how the vibrant wallcovering is  highlighted by white accents. What an amazing way to showcase Vera Bradley’s lovely products!
